Entrance Exams – Importance of speed writing

The current generation – Alpha – the group of individuals born between 2010 and 2025 – is digital-savvy. That too after this new normal, many children have forgotten to write.

Online education during this pandemic has further accelerated this transition. Everything is online now.

Hence they write lesser than most previous generations.

Still worse, that students take snapshots nowadays on their mobile. As a trainer, I do not allow the participants of my training to take photos or snapshots of the slides. I insist them on writing.

However, writing by hand is an important skill for students as it engages the brain. Studies show that writing improves memory (previous generations may remember the ‘imposition’ assigned by class teachers). Writing helps students retain information in a much better way than typing.

The main concern is, in India, most competitive examinations are still handwritten. Marks are allotted for speed and legibility. Interestingly speed writing is never a challenge for us but the legibility is!

There are 2 areas of concern.

1. We write fast ONLY to scratch our heads to decipher it later.

2. We are so conscious about legibility that we run short of time to complete.

Writing Speed per minute (like in typing)

For the students writing competitive exams, 30 -35 words per minute is a good speed. Many skip competitive written exams for lack of this speed or those who write, complain about lack of time!!

Competitive exams require the aspirants to write long essays in stipulated time. So, instead of highlighting important points in the book, start writing them down on a note which enhances your memory and writing skills.

Calculate speed per minute

Divide the number of words you write on a sheet of paper by the time taken.

Understand the gap between your current speed with the speed required. Then practice improving it with a timer whenever you write. Do monitor your progress.

Choose the right pen:

If you keep breaking your knuckles in between writing, then perhaps your pen is not the right one for you.

Consistency in your letter formation, connectivity in writing, and spacing are the 3 elements you should practice to enhance your writing.

All the Best!!!
